From Bats
to the Bible:
A Conversation
with Katy Hinman

Prior to entering the ministry full-time, Decatur First's Associate Minister, Katy Hinman, was a bat biologist. Read about her career change and decision to become a United Methodist minister.

Katy, you have a PhD in Ecology and Evolution, and worked in Arizona as a bat biologist. How did you become interested in bats?
I keep wishing I had a story about how a bat saved my life as a child, and I decided then and there to dedicate my life to bats, but alas it’s not quite that dramatic. I used to work at a camp in North Carolina, and we would take the kids caving. Some of the caves we went into had bats living in them, and we would always give the kids some information about bats before they went in, so that they wouldn’t be scared. The director of the camp loved bats and always had some neat trivia to share about them, and I caught the fever from her. It wasn’t until many years later that I learned that my dad had also studied bats way back in college, before he decided to go to medical school. So apparently it’s in my blood to love bats.

Was it hard to leave this profession and enter the ministry?
The hardest part about leaving science to go into the ministry was getting used to the different types of language and ways of thinking that you use. When I got to seminary, I couldn’t understand why on earth I had to write papers for some of my classes about how I felt about things. I was only used to writing papers about observable and measurable scientific information. No one cared how I felt about something; they just wanted to know if I had the statistical data to back it up.

What led you into the ministry?
When I was in graduate school studying bats, I was very active in my Methodist church. The folks in that church were the ones who pushed me into considering ministry. First they recruited me to serve on the Worship Committee in the church, then they signed me up to read scripture in morning services, then they sent me off to lay speaker training, and then advanced lay speaker training. I kept telling them over and over that I already had a career chosen, but they kept pushing and that led me into the discernment process and finally into seminary and the ministry.

Is your current job anything like your career as a biologist?
Hmmm… well, I do still keep strange hours, there are always surprises, and I love what I’m doing, so from that perspective I guess, yeah, it is like being a biologist. Luckily, I don’t have to stay up all night anymore, and I have other people to talk to and not just bats!

Do you still work with bats on occasion?
I do try to work with bats whenever I get the chance, though it’s not very often. I still occasionally do educational programs for schools and civic groups, and I have managed to go out on some wildlife surveys (called bio-blitzes) to look for bats. Last year, I went to Yellowstone to help with a bat survey there. And I try to get back out to Arizona every few years to help teach a course in bat study techniques for other biologists.
