Nursery Care

Care for Infants and Toddlers at Decatur First UMC

(Infants & Toddlers)

Our little ones’ first impression of God and our church family begins in the nursery. While getting a diaper changed, enjoying food, or playing, your little one will know that God loves him/her. This phase  of the journey is crucial and our nursery is staffed with some of the most loving people you’ll meet. Caravan is available from 8:30 a.m.–12:15 p.m. in rooms 102 and 104.

Infant and Toddler Rooms
The nurseries are divided into Infant and Toddler rooms. If you are unsure about which nursery is right for your child, please feel free to speak with the nursery staff. Our skilled care providers will gladly help you decide where your child will be most comfortable. Vibrating beepers are provided so that we can notify parents in case of an emergency.

Nursery Staff and Care
The nurseries are staffed with paid care providers who have prior childcare experience. The rooms are stocked with educational, safe and developmentally-appropriate toys, puzzles and games. Caregivers are all highly trained and the lead nursery workers are CPR-certified. Vibrating beepers are provided to parents and guardians in case of emergencies. Dry snacks, including graham crackers, pretzels and crackers are offered and provided by the church. No snacks with cheese or nuts are offered in either nursery.

We ask that parents send children with enough diapers or pull-ups (no cloth diapers, please) for their child, as well as the child's bottle or sippy cup. Parents should clearly label all diapers, bottles, pacifiers, bags, extra clothes, comfort items, or any other items sent with the child.

Nursing mothers are encouraged to join us in the nursery at any time. We encourage an “open door” policy for all parents. If your child is ill, exhibits signs of a virus or a cold, or has had a fever within the last 24 hours, we request that you refrain from bringing the child to church. Respecting this policy is very important to the safety, health and comfort of your child, as well as the care providers and the other children in the nursery.

Please feel free to ask any questions or mention any concerns you have to the nursery workers when you bring your child on Sunday mornings.

Volunteer Opportunities -- Loving Arms Nursery Volunteers
For those who enjoy babies and wish to nurture our little ones, there are opportunities to serve as a “Loving Arms” volunteer to supplement the paid nursery staff. “Loving Arms” volunteers may be asked to rock and feed babies, serve snacks to toddlers, interact and play with children on the floor, and read stories to little ones.

Volunteer eligibility is based on our Safe Sanctuaries policies and applies to adult church members 18 years of age or older. Individuals wishing to volunteer who are not members of the church may volunteer if they have been attending Decatur First UMC for at least six months. All volunteers are approved by the Director of Children’s Ministries and are trained by the Nursery Supervisor.

“Loving Arms” volunteers are asked to serve one Sunday per quarter from 10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Volunteers are placed in either the Infant or Toddler Nursery and are guided and assisted by an assigned lead nursery worker. Comfortable clothes should be worn on your volunteer day.

If you are interested in being a “Loving Arms” Nursery Volunteer, please contact Nursery Supervisor Lora Biccum at loraustin@gmail.com for more information.
