Lent 2012: Roads Less Traveled:
“Spiritual Passageways”

This year throughout Lent we will be exploring Wesley's spiritual disciplines, both in worship and on Wednesday nights. We begin with our annual service of imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday. Following Ash Wednesday, each week will focus on a single spiritual discipline. The Sunday sermon will explore the theological implications while the Wednesday evening program (immediately following Cafe Decatur) will offer an opportunity to practice the spiritual discipline.
February 26/February 29: Fasting
March 4/March 7: Communion
March 11/March 14: Prayer
March 18/March 21: Scripture
March 25/March 28: Acts of Charity
Our celebration of Holy week will once again begin with a worship service that include both Palms and Passion, as well as a Palms to Passion concert in the evening. It will include noon services each day and a Taize service of Remembrance for Good Friday. This year, our Maundy Thursday observance will include foot washing and a love feast.
Café Decatur and
Ash Wednesday Service
Come on out Ash Wednesday night, February 22, at 5:45 p.m. for soup, salad, sandwich, and dessert at Café Decatur. The Ash Wednesday Service will be held after supper at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary.
"Palms to Passion" Concert
On April 1, 2012 at 5:00pm, the Chancel Choir of Decatur First United Methodist Church, accompanied by organ and orchestra, will offer a concert entitled "Palms to Passion: Holy Week through the Heart of Lazarus." The concert features music of Maurice Durufle, including his Requiem and Notre Pere. In addition, the concert features a series of dramatic monologues exploring the events of holy week through the eyes and experience of Lazarus, the friend of Jesus. Admission is free, and childcare is available.
