Basic United Methodist Beliefs

The Source of Our Beliefs

The United Methodist Church holds to "a marrow of truth" that finds its source in the Wesleyan Quadrilateral.

Our beliefs are:

  •  Revealed in Scripture

  • Illumined by tradition

  • Made vivid by experience

  • Confirmed by reason

The "Marrow of Truth"

  •  Prevenient Grace - God is at work in the heart of every person, even before their salvation, lovingly drawing that person to himself. Romans 2:4 - "God's kindness is meant to lead you to repentance."
  • Justifying Grace - Upon entering into a relationship with Jesus Christ, each person experiences the forgiveness of sin. Galatians 2:16 - "And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ…"
  •   Sanctifying Grace - The Christian life is a process of being made holy.  The Holy Spirit brings about this work in the life of the believer. I Thessalonians 4:3 – “It is God's will that you should be sanctified…"
  • Mission and Service - All Christians, not just the clergy, are called to serve Christ according to the gifts they have been given. Matthew 28:19 - "Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you." I Corinthians 12:7 - "To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good."

  • Christian Fellowship and Worshipping Community - Time spent in corporate worship and in the company of other Christians is essential for growth in the Christian life.Hebrews 10:25 - "Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another…"
