Who are Decatur First United Methodist Women?

A women’s group of our Decatur Church first began in 1876 as a Ladies Sewing Society. It changed names many times during the years, It was the Women’s Missionary Society, Women’s Foreign Missionary Society, Women’s Home Mission Society, Women’s Missionary Society, Women’s Society of Christian Service and Wesleyan Service Guild (working women), and finally in 1973 it became United Methodist Women, with a membership of over 400. Today at Decatur First United Methodist Church we have 4 day circles and 2 night circles. Our membership is around 150. We support many local missions. Last year, in addition to our budget, we gave approximately $4,800 to our local projects. As members of a world wide group of United Methodist Women, we support missions around the world. Who Is a Member?

A member of United Methodist Women is anyone who commits herself to the UMW purpose and chooses to belong.  United Methodist Women celebrates an inclusive membership and welcomes all women who want to become members.

Being a member of The United Methodist Church is not required nor is there any minimum age requirement. Out of a commitment for mission locally and globally with women, children and youth, United Methodist Women choose to participate in meetings, prayer, financial giving, study, action and service.
 
United Methodist Women is a community of women who nurture and encourage one another in their spiritual growth, personal leadership and transformation. As a member, you accept the challenge to expand concepts of mission.

Our Purpose

The organized unit of UNITED METHODIST WOMEN shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God, and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
 

Why Become a Member?

Why become a United Methodist Woman?  United Methodist Women is a national membership organization with nearly one-million members whose purpose is to foster spiritual growth, develop leaders and advocate for justice!  Members raise approximately $20 million a year for programs and projects related to women, children and youth in the and in more than 100 countries around the world!
