Small Groups
Ten Reasons to Get Involved in a Small Group
1. Small groups are the foundation of our United Methodist heritage. The Methodist movement began as small groups that met weekly for prayer, study, and accountability.
2. If you are new to Decatur First UMC, a small group is a great place to get to know people on a more personal level than “How are you? I’m fine.”
3. If you have been at Decatur First UMC for a while, you will meet people in your church family who are beyond your circle of friends, your Sunday school class, or the people you sit by in church.
4. Ask a friend or your spouse to join a group with you. You will strengthen your relationship and continue to support one another when the group ends.
5. Even if you think you don’t know anything about the Bible, you are likely to find that you know more than you think you do, and you’ll gain the skills and desire to learn more.
6. You will start to sense that your life is a chapter in God’s unfolding story.
7. You will start to feel more comfortable talking about God and God’s Word at church, at home, and even at work.
8. If you are serving as a leader at Decatur First UMC, a small group can provide a strong foundation for your work and support for your ministry.
9. If you are looking for ways to be involved in the life of the church, a small group is a great starting place.
10. Through independent and group study, you'll establish a rhythm of daily time with God, weekly time in Christian community, and a lifelong attentiveness to possibilities for serving the world.
