Communion

Holy Communion is a celebration and remembrance of God's grace and mercy in Jesus and of God’s constant presence with us. You may have heard it called "the Lord's Supper" or "Eucharist".  We celebrate Communion in both the 8:45 am and 11:00 am worship services on the first Sunday of every month.

Frequently asked questions about Holy Communion:

Why do we celebrate Holy Communion?

In Communion, we reenact the actions of Jesus at supper with his disciples on the night before he died:

The pastor takes the bread and cup
We give thanks to God
The pastor breaks the bread
The bread and cup are given to all who desire

Who is allowed to take communion?

In the United Methodist Church we practice an open communion table.  Every child and adult is welcome to receive communion.   You do not need to be a member of this church, or any church, to receive communion here.

How do I receive communion?

At Decatur First United Methodist Church we receive communion in two different ways.  At the 8:45 am service on Sunday mornings you are invited to come as the ushers direct you and kneel around our altar.  You will be given a small piece of bread to eat and a small cup of juice to drink.  After everyone has been served we join hands for a prayer of dismissal.  At the 11:00 am service on Sundays and the 5:00 pm service on Wednesdays we receive Communion by intinction.  You will be given a piece of bread, then you dip it in the cup of juice and then eat.  The altar rails are available for you to pray and then you may return to your seat.

Is there wine or juice in the cup?

We always use grape juice for communion.
