Organic Garden
During these tough economic times, it seems like everyone from the Obamas in the White House to many of our neighbors in Decatur are starting their own gardens. Growing your own food is a wonderful way to save money, eat healthier, and care for God’s creation. DFUMC is getting in on the action by creating our own organic garden - the Heavenly Harvest - and we’re putting a mission spin on it. At least 50% of our harvest will be donated to local charities, including Decatur Emergency Assistance Ministry, United Methodist Children's Home, Mountain View Personal Care Home, and Clifton Sanctuary Ministries.
A Summary of Our First Year
Summer 2009 was our garden's first year and we surprised ourselves with the success! Our garden produced over 70 pounds of tomatoes, 25 pounds of cucumbers, 25 pounds of okra, 25 pounds of green beans, and a variety of other crops (including beets, lettuce, peas, melons, corn, green onions, squash, turnips, and basil). We also planted a small autumn garden (greens and root vegetables).
This year's garden is already underway. While the soil preparation and planting has already been done, there is still a great need for weekly work. To find out more about the garden or to get involved, please contact Laura Perry or 617-233-0331.
